Put your trust in wine merchants this Christmas

At this time of year, it's normal for wine merchants to be asked what is the best wine for Christmas - or to put it another way, what are the most popular Christmas wines?

The answer is simple: just as at any other time of year, everybody has their own personal tastes, and if you're catering for a large extended family, you're unlikely to please everybody.

If you need something to satisfy several generations from teenagers to grandparents, possibly including in-laws from other parts of the country, consider buying a few different options.

Chardonnay is of course one of the classics, while Sauvignon Blanc is a modern classic too; in reds, Pinot Noir and Malbec are both on-trend at the moment.

For something especially festive, check if your wine merchants have any sparkling reds; there are several great sparkling Shiraz blends out there, which could be something totally new for your guests to try.

And finally, a hat-tip to the Wine Society for their ideas of wine-related Christmas songs, published on their Society Grapevine blog.

Our favourites have got to be: I Wish It Could Be Cristal Every Day, and the brilliant It's Bourgogne To Look A Lot Like Christmas.
