Olympic legacy may inspire Buxton residents to buy wine

You don't have to be from Leek to buy wine in our Buxton wine merchants, but we'll understand if you feel like celebrating Anna Watkins' Olympic achievement.

We're proud of all our closest neighbours' successes - and you could run from Leek to our Buxton wine merchants and back without covering the 26 miles of a marathon.

But it was on the water, not on the roads, where Anna Watkins earned her gold medal (and a golden post box, courtesy of Royal Mail), when she won the women's double sculls rowing alongside veteran competitor Katherine Grainger.

The victory - in what is likely to have been Grainger's last Olympic appearance - was one of the most moving moments of London 2012, and should rightfully be celebrated.

However, it's not just the gold medals of London 2012 that are encouraging people nationwide to get into the Olympic spirit.

Many may have been inspired to buy wine simply to sip while watching the Opening Ceremony, as British Retail Consortium figures show a boost in food and drink sales at the end of July, buoyed further by the unexpected good weather.

With another sunny, warm weekend expected leading up to the Closing Ceremony on Sunday, it's an ideal chance to visit our wine merchants across the north-west, and stock up on your favourite tipple.

In fact, with Team GB riding high in the medals table, why not add some champagne to your basket, and honour their astonishing 50+ medals in style?
