Newcomers give independent wine merchants more British options

Your independent wine merchant may be able to supply you with a wider variety of British wines in the not too distant future, as an increasing number of domestic producers are creating award-winning wines.

The UK Vineyards Association recently presented medals as part of the English & Welsh Wine of the Year 2013 awards.

Of the 189 entries received, 78% received recognition of some form, including 69 bronze medals, 68 silver and 11 gold.

A total of 13 trophies were also presented, including five for East Anglian producers, four for the south-west, three for the south-east and one in the East Midlands.

Paul Langham, chairman of the UK Vineyards Association, said: "I was particularly impressed with the spread of new and established producers that won awards this year."

While some vineyards consistently win titles year after year, several of this year's trophies and medals went to newcomers.

This helps independent wine merchants to recognise the UK's best new wines - allowing them to add them to their stock, so that enthusiasts nationwide can enjoy the best Britain's vineyards have to offer.
